Ride to Recycle: Pedalling Towards Sustainable Solutions

Project duration: July 2024 – July 2025

Rota is a voluntary organisation advocating for safe bicycle use in Malta with an aim to represent all those who cycle or want to cycle in Malta.  They carry out lobbying to promote cycling to decision-makers, provide advice, educate about the principles of best practice by all road users, collaborate with groups who have similar interests and organise events to bring the cycling community together.

The Malta Environment Foundation is supporting Rota to carry out a project promoting the use of cargo bikes instead of cars within village cores. By reducing car traffic, air pollution is mitigated and cleaner, healthier and safer environments are created. It also fosters a culture of eco-friendly living and leads to community engagement.

The project, in collaboration with GreenPak, also aims to revolutionise battery collection for recycling in Malta. By utilising a cargo bike for door-to-door collection, Rota will be promoting sustainable transportation while gathering funds for charitable causes.

The Malta Environment Foundation is excited to be supporting Rota’s initiative by facilitating the purchase of a cargo bike allowing Rota to continue its invaluable work to reduce Malta’s reliance on cars and promote alternative transportation methods.

Through this project Rota will be promoting sustainable transportation while supporting battery recycling efforts. The expected results are:

  • Enhanced battery recycling rates
  • Reduced landfill waste and toxic pollution
  • Reduced air pollution
  • Increased awareness about cycling and behavioural change

“The grant from MEF will significantly enhance Rota’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability and active mobility. With the funds, we will acquire a cargo bike to collect used batteries for recycling through a collaboration with GreenPak, with proceeds benefiting Hospice Malta. This project not only facilitates door-to-door collection with zero emissions but also demonstrates the immense potential of cycling. We believe this initiative will contribute to cleaner, more people-oriented village cores, advancing our mission of advocating for active, eco-friendly transportation solutions.”
