Meet il-Qabru: The Inspiration Behind MEF’s Logo

In the hidden refugia of the Maltese islands, nestled in burrows close to sources of freshwater, resides a remarkable creature that has captured the attention and admiration of nature enthusiasts – il-Qabru, or the Maltese Freshwater Crab (Potamon fluviatile lanfrancoi). This critically endangered crab was declared Malta’s National Invertebrate in 2018, serving as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between human development and nature’s resilience. As we diligently work to protect Malta’s environment, we draw inspiration from il-Qabru’s tenacity and resilience, which is why we chose this animal as the emblem of Malta Environment Foundation’s (MEF) logo.  

Il-Qabru’s name might ring a bell for those with fond memories of Malta’s old currency, the Lira. It was prominently featured on the 5c coin, serving as a subtle reminder of the island’s rich natural heritage. At MEF, we are deeply passionate about exploring the intricate connections between people and nature. We firmly believe that the value of wildlife extends far beyond monetary measures. That’s why, when selecting an emblem for MEF’s logo, il-Qabru emerged as the perfect candidate. This critter not only embodies Malta’s unique biodiversity but also reflects our dedication to fostering a new relationship between society and nature, one that goes beyond the benefits of natural capital and appreciates the intrinsic green and blue values.  

Through our initiatives and collaborations, we aim to nurture a deeper appreciation for the natural treasures that make Malta so extraordinary. Il-Qabru, with its captivating presence, will forever serve as a symbol of our unwavering commitment to creating a more sustainable and harmonious future for Malta’s environment and its people.
