Grants
Through the Eyes of the Rangers
€5550 awarded
Grantees: Malta Ranger Unit
Project duration: January 2026 – December 2026
The Challenge
The Malta Ranger Unit carries out environmental monitoring, incident response, and enforcement support across Malta’s natural areas. Rangers frequently encounter unpredictable situations, including illegal activities and potential confrontations, often while working in remote or poorly accessible locations.
Currently, the Unit operates with only one professional camera. This limits the ability to document incidents effectively, restricts coverage across multiple locations, and requires rangers to approach situations more closely in order to collect usable evidence – increasing personal risk.
The Solution
Through funding provided by MEF, the Malta Ranger Unit were able to purchase two professional optical cameras (Nikon Coolpix P1100) and one thermal camera to strengthen both operational safety and documentation capacity.
Project Outcomes
The powerful zoom capability of the optical cameras will allow rangers to:
- Monitor, assess, and record incidents from a safe distance, reducing the need for direct approach and lowering the risk of confrontation while ensuring reliable evidence collection. The thermal camera further enhances night-time monitoring and detection of hidden activities.
- Document incidents simultaneously from multiple angles and locations, improving accuracy of reporting, evidence quality, and resource allocation during operations.
- Use the cameras in educational workshops, enabling participants to understand their importance and help provide practical training on environmental reporting and strengthen public awareness of environmental crime.
By improving ranger safety, operational efficiency, and public engagement, the project enhances environmental protection capacity and supports more effective monitoring and conservation across Malta.
